U.S. Embassy – Live from the Cairo Jazz Festival

This year, the U.S. Embassy is supporting three American jazz groups at the Cairo Jazz Festival to connect American and Egyptian jazz artists and fans, alongside other international artists. The festival will also screen two American documentary films and discuss the history of jazz diplomacy.

Highlighting the participation of the United States, Ambassador Jonathan R. Cohen said, “The Embassy of the United States is supporting the Cairo Jazz Festival this year by sponsoring visiting American musicians who carry on our tradition of jazz diplomacy. dating back six decades to the historic visit to Egypt of famous jazz musician Louis Armstrong.

ICX Jazz Ensemble, talented instrumentalists from American universities will perform during the opening night of the Cairo Jazz Festival at the Tahrir Cultural Center on October 28. It will be followed by a concert on October 29 by the dynamic six-member American jazz fusion group AJOYO on stage at the Tahrir Cultural Center. On October 31, Dr Ayman Fanous, a well-known contemporary free jazz and improvisation artist, will perform with internationally renowned cellist Frances-Marie Utti.

The three groups will run master classes and workshops for music students and jazz enthusiasts. Additionally, AJOYO will be hosting a workshop for students of the English Access Microscholarship program, the US Embassy’s premier English language program for young Egyptians.

Two jazz groups sponsored by the Embassy will reach audiences outside of Cairo. AJOYO will host a workshop and perform in Alexandria and ICX Jazz Ensemble will perform in Minya, both on October 30.

The U.S. Embassy’s support for the Cairo Jazz Festival is part of a larger effort to connect and encourage American and Egyptian artists and cultural organizations, and to strengthen people-to-people relationships between the United States. and Egypt.
