Three Blue Devils Take Academic Honors From All CoSIDA Districts

DURHAM – Duke relief pitcher Matt Dockman and the voltigeurs Joey loperfido and RJ Schreck have all been named to the first District III varsity team of 2020-21 College of America Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA).

To be eligible, student-athletes must be a beginner or key reserve, reach second level at their current school, maintain a GPA of at least 3.3, and be appointed by their sports information director.

Duke, who has had nine CoSIDA Academic All-District nods over the past four seasons, has joined Miami as the only ACC program with a first team selection this year.

Dockman wins his third CoSIDA All-District academic honor, also being named to the first team in 2019 and 2020. In 78 career appearances and 107 innings pitched, the Hilliard, Ohio native is 7-3 with an ERA of 3.62 and 105 strikeouts. In 2021, Dockman completed 30 innings of work in 21 appearances with a 4.80 ERA and a 1-1 record. He kept opposing hitters at a career low 0.235 batting average. He graduated in May 2021 with degrees in economics and mathematics.

A nod from the second All-ACC team as a senior, Loperfido concluded a brilliant career at Duke, playing in the infield his first two seasons before moving to the outfield. While he was Blue Devil, the native of Haddonfield, NJ, has slashed 0.317 / 0.419 0.488 throughout his career, with his percentage ranking on base tied for 10th all-time in the tradition of the program. Additionally, Loperfido’s career batting average, runs scored (142), homers (18), goals stolen (41) and shots touching downs (31) all rank in the top 20 of the l history of Duke. In 2021, Loperfido placed second in the ACC with a batting average of 0.374. He was named the CCA Baseball Tournament MVP after helping Duke win his first conference tournament title in the program’s history. In May 2021, he obtained a license in sociology.

Schreck had an exceptional year as a junior in 2021, winning All-ACC Third Team honors. After compiling just 15 hits in his first two years, the Los Angeles, Calif. Native hit .337 with 70 hits and 18 home runs in the team’s lead in 2021. He also led the team. in RBIs (52), stroke percentage (.635) and multi-RBI games (14). His 18 long balls as a junior were fifth in the conference and fourth all-time by a Blue Devil in a single season. Schreck was named to the NCAA Knoxville Regional All-Star Team after hitting three home runs in a single game against Wright State. He is currently pursuing a degree in computer science and is expected to graduate in May 2022.

Due to their placement on the All-District Team, all three will pass the All-America CoSIDA Academic Team Ballot, with the First and Second Academic All-America® Team winners announced in late July.
