Due to the extreme weather forecast due to Tropical Storm Elsa, the 12th Annual Montclair Jazz Festival Kickoff Concert has been rescheduled from Thursday July 8 to Thursday July 15 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Lackawanna Plaza.

The concert will feature Storytellers with Alex Laurenzi, opening act for Cocomama.

Alex Laurenzi is an award-winning saxophonist and arranger from Mountain Lakes. A longtime student at Jazz House, Laurenzi recently graduated in African American History from Princeton University and has been an active member of the jazz program for all four years. This is the premiere of his new group, Storytellers.

In an announcement for the event, organizers said that Cocomama’s eight-piece Latin American jazz orchestra “has been described as a virtual UN of women, whose members hail from five countries on four continents. Playing their own genre of Latin American music, powerfully virtuoso yet elegantly musical, Cocomama “brings it in” creating a sound that is both fierce and beautiful.

On Thursday, July 22, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., CHiCA Power All-Stars and the Dave Stryker Eight Track Band will celebrate classic 70s pop tunes reimagined.

Jazz House Kids’ CHiCA Power program focuses on music education and empowerment for girls ages 9-19. Jazz House Kids artistic director Christian McBride said it was a flagship program for the school that set it apart from many other arts organizations.
