Mike Conley missed the first four games of the second round series between the Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Clippers with mild hamstring strain, and according to the team, his status for Game 5 remains uncertain. The Jazz currently ranks Conley as questionable for Wednesday’s pivotal contest.

The Jazz won the first two games of their series against the Clippers, but lost the next two in Los Angeles. In NBA history, 183 playoffs have been tied 2-2 after four games. The team that wins Game 5 is 149-34 overall in the series, giving the winner an 81.4% win rate in the series. The Jazz will host Game 5 in Salt Lake City, but Conley was sorely missed. Without him, Donovan Mitchell had to shoulder most of the ball handling load for Utah. To his credit, he excelled despite his own ankle injury. Mitchell is averaging 37.3 points per game in the series, but he recognizes that he may have to keep playing at that level to keep the Jazz alive.

“We can’t wait to get him back. But until he is, we have to be able to do what we do because at the end of the day the Clippers don’t care,” Mitchell said. told reporters after game 3. “So whenever he comes back and he’s ready to go, we’ll be ready for him because we miss that experience.”

The Jazz have not come up with a specific timeline for Conley’s return, with coach Quin Snyder saying “when Mike’s ready he’ll come back.” Conley averaged 20 points and 10.3 assists in the first four playoff games against Memphis, but made that hamstring worse in the deciding Series 5 game against the Grizzlies. He missed nine games at the end of the regular season with the same injury. Hamstring injuries recurred in both playoff conferences. James Harden missed most of Brooklyn’s second-round battle against Milwaukee with a hamstring problem after sustaining a regular season injury.

The Clippers have seized the momentum of this series over the last two games in Los Angeles, and they’ve already proven they can overcome a 2-0 deficit like they did in the first round against Dallas. Conley’s return would give the Jazz a major boost against one of the toughest teams in the NBA.
