A three-generation dynasty of singers won big this weekend when a grandmother and grandson won two national titles.

The titles come after Russell and Josh won titles at the Auckland Country Music Awards in April, allowing them to make the national final.

For Russell, an accomplished singer for 30 years, seeing her grandson win was a fantastic experience.

“It’s an elite competition … it was pretty special.”

Russell only ended up competing this year because her husband convinced her she should enter after deciding she would escort Josh to the Auckland final.

Josh, 16, has competed for eight years and has already won the title of Junior Artist of the Year.

Now he aims to win the Senior category in three years and hopes to expand his music to the world after finishing high school and college.

Russell said Josh’s family were proud of his achievement, which they watched live in New Zealand and Australia.

Growing up with music, Russell said singing with his grandson was especially special.

“I have been truly blessed. “

Josh’s parents also won awards – the couple won the Senior Entertainer of the Year award with Russell when they competed as the Always at Heart family musical trio in 2016.
