Just over an hour’s drive north of Boston, you will easily find yourself under the spell of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. During the day, you can explore museums and historic homes, stroll through the garden of Prescott Park or shop in the boutiques of Market Square. And in the evening, you can watch the sunset over the Piscataqua River before strolling up Congress Street to number 135, the site of the 1905 YMCA building, now beautifully restored as Jimmy’s. Take a break before entering and admire the stunning floor-to-ceiling windows – completely recreated to match 1905 conditions, as seen in old black-and-white photos and period newspaper articles – complete with custom decorative moldings and copper roofs reminiscent of from Portsmouth apogee.
Once inside 135 Congress Street, you will find a visually stunning environment that welcomes you into this perfect link between traditional and contemporary old world architecture, complete with modern design. In the main room, the original wooden beams and trusses, brick walls and fireplaces retain the original atmosphere, while natural light flows through an elegant two-story glass addition to the rear of the building .
Start with signature cocktails, then move on to the Southern-inspired menu, enjoying a dining experience that lives up to the quality of the top musicians. And once these masters take the stage – backed by production, sound and lighting technologies that rival any of the best jazz and blues venues in the world – you’ll find yourself lost in the joy of live music and its affirmation of the importance of connecting and sharing human experience.
Four years in the making following the meticulous historic restoration of an original 1905 YMCA building, the club – named after a local businessman Jacques Labrie, died in 2016 – is the brainchild of his sons, local restaurateurs / developers and jazz and blues enthusiasts Michael and Peter Labrie, co-owners of Groupe Labrie, a real estate company. The company also owns Atlantic Grill and River house Restaurants.
“We wanted to make a valuable contribution to jazz and blues music and we thought the best way to do that was to create one of the best jazz and blues clubs in the world – right here in the world. Grand Portsmouth, NH, the coastal community that my brother and I love so much, ”says Michael.
Inspired by a Moulin Rouge-style cabaret vibe, the venue features a multi-level brick and beam interior with original stained glass, two majestic original atrium windows, and a new addition of glass and glass. multistage steel in the rear.
