Dame Zandra Rhodes announced that she had designed a line of household products for the Swedish furniture chain, a decision she made after painting her Billy bookcase “an iridescent Frida Kahlo blue”.

Rhodes, who has previously worked with rock stars Marc Bolan and Freddie Mercury, as well as Diana, Princess of Wales, will release a 26-piece collection in her “strong and proud” color palette next week – including vases , rugs and lampshades.

The Karismatisk collection has been in the works for over two years, and Rhodes has been influenced by our growing attachment to domestic life throughout the Covid pandemic.

“The lockdown made us realize how important our homes are,” she said. “We spent time in our homes getting to know each other instead of rushing to work,” she says, “that made it all the more important to do a collection like this. “

“As a designer, it’s wonderful if you can create something that will reach people,” she said. “When I make my clothes, they are all very limited and unique. This is how I felt I could make a living, but it’s wonderful when you do something that can reach more people, I can’t wait to see people walking around with one of the bags roses.

Describing her own experiences with Ikea, she said: “I have the Billy bookcase that I painted in iridescent Frida Kahlo blue, and I have other Ikea shelves that are for my files, which I painted in. yellow. I just thought, ‘I would love to work for Ikea’.

With the launch of the Rhodes collection on September 1, Goodrum believes the focus on interiors marks a change within the industry. “What’s interesting is that fashion chooses to align itself with domestic culture and the home in times of crisis, a kind of metaphorical search for shelter, if you will,” she said.

“This reflects a larger societal trend in which our personal and home space is receiving more attention and investment than ever before as a reflection of who we are or who we aspire to be.
