Weekday broadcast of WYMT Mountain News First at Four

PAINTSVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) — Award-winning country music star Chris Stapleton is known for giving back to his hometown and his alma mater. He donated more than $50,000 for musical instruments as well as a free concert for Johnson County students and community in 2016.

This year, Stapleton invites the Johnson Central Class of 2022 to its April 23 concert at Kroger Field in Lexington.

“It covers all expenses, including the cost of the ticket as well as transportation,” Johnson Central principal Justin Arms said. “It’s just a huge, generous gesture on his behalf.”

When Arms let the seniors participate in Stapleton’s plans, the class was thrilled to celebrate their graduation with another Golden Eagle.

“It was within 30 minutes that over half of our senior class had signed up for this and then I opened it up to chaperones and I really think it could be one of the quickest response times as well for some of our faculty and staff to volunteer,” Arms said. “Once again, we are just celebrating the accomplishments and we are very grateful that he thought of us.”

The trip will give the senior class, who have missed much of their graduate and postgraduate years due to the pandemic, the opportunity to bond and make memories.

“Our class has been missing a lot because of COVID and that’s like one of the great things we can do as a class,” Johnson Central senior Sydney May said. “I feel like it’s going to be something we can cherish together and really remember forever, so I’m excited.”

It’s also a celebration of the achievements of the Class of 2022 as well as the accomplishments of a local legend.

“It really made me happy just so I could, you know, go see the hometown legend, go play,” Johnson Central senior Keygan Pelfrey said.

Arms, who was a math professor at Johnson Central when Stapleton graduated in 1996, said it was wonderful to have someone so successful come from your hometown to serve as a role model for the next generation. it’s great that Stapleton still remembers its roots. , and I wanted to thank him for continuing to give back to his community.
