The Toronto Blue Jays put third baseman Cavan Biggio on the 10-day injured list with a sprained cervical ligament in his spine on Saturday.
Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo expects Biggio to be ready to return when he is eligible to leave IL.
“It’s really nagging,” Montoyo said. “He lets go and then he’s fine, but the more he plays it gets too uncomfortable. The best thing for him is just to take the 10 days so that we can get rid of that pain and be ready to come back after 10 days. “
Biggio was out of the starting lineup on Friday night with neck pain, but he was pinched.
Montoyo said center fielder George Springer, with a right quadriceps strain, runs sprints at around 50-60 percent. Springer will have to lead the bases and go into rehabilitation in a minor league before joining the team.
Relief Anthony Castro (right forearm strain) and infielder Joe Panik (left calf stretched) were both reinstated from the 10-day IL, and right-hander Ty Tice was recalled from Triple -A Buffalo.
Left-hander Anthony Kay and right-hander Jeremy Beasley have been selected for Buffalo.
