Bruce Campbell to write for DC Comics

Set in 1944, Sgt. Rock and his Easy Company will face off against their most fearsome foes yet: Nazi Zombies.

Bruce Campbell return to the world of comics! Sensational. Campbell will write DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. army of the dead, a six-issue miniseries coming out under the publisher’s DC Horror banner. The miniseries will feature the art of Edouardo Risso and recontextualizes the adventures of Sgt. Rock, which was created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert in 1959.

This isn’t Campbell’s first time in comics, but it’s the first since the release of the Dark Horse comic, The man with the screaming brain, based on the film of the same name starring Campbell. DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. army of the dead #1 is slated for release on September 27 and looks like a brilliant adventure for Campbell to embark on.

While on Bloody Disgusting’s The Boo Crew podcast in late 2021, Campbell revealed,

“I’m writing a comic for a big comic company right now,” And that’s six issues you need to plot. And I can’t sit there with a pen in my mouth… staring at a blank page… I want to understand scene by scene and know where the story is going. Because I can actually step back from that board and look at the whole story and say, ‘Hmm, that first part is a little off balance…ohh that middle is a little big there.’ So you can access it even before writing a word. It might still suck, okay, but I like going in with some kind of discipline. I’m going to start early in the morning and by noon my brain is leaking through my nose, and it’s time to mow the grass or go for a swim or something physical.”

For Campbell fans, it’s a pretty amazing deal because we’re getting more comics, more of the Evil Dead world, and we’re getting a little more Campbell in our lives and it’s still pretty amazing. DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The army of dead #1 is heading our way on September 27th.
